Save energy with intelligent thermostats and smart functions

Part one of our series on "Saving energy": Saving energy in winter with the help of intelligent thermostats and automation systems.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), up to six percent of heating energy can be saved if the room temperature is reduced by one degree. Experts consider the installation of intelligent thermostats on radiators to be even more sensible. Intelligent thermostats reduce consumption while still ensuring comfortable temperatures indoors. Depending on the degree of automation, savings of up to 30 percent savings can be achieved. However, the smart helpers not only regulate the temperature, but also prove to be real organizational talents with the right settings - which means there is enormous potential for savings if you know what is important.

The German Energy Agency (dena) also wants to oblige homeowners to install smart thermostats due to the current dramatic situation and is therefore calling for the installation of digital thermostats on radiators. They argue that the key to saving heating energy lies above all in the transparency created by these technologies. If consumers know where and when energy is being consumed, they can take targeted measures to save energy - manually or fully automatically.

What can the smart thermostats do?

Control temperature via app

The thermostats are connected to the internet in your own home and can then be conveniently controlled via an app on your smartphone. This allows room temperatures to be regulated while on the move. If the residents are not at home all day, savings can be made throughout the day. Even before the residents come home in the evening, the heating can be turned up with the smart thermostat so that all rooms are warm in good time.

Create schedule/individual room control

Every room in your home needs a different temperature, and at different times of the day. While the bathroom should be pleasantly warm in the early morning, the comfortable temperature in the living room is only important in the afternoon after work. At the weekend, however, the daily routine is different, which is why individual schedules are a simple and reliable way of controlling the heating. They are conveniently created via app and saved automatically. This way, the intelligent thermostat always executes the schedule automatically, regardless of the internet connection or your cell phone.

Control via heating scenes

If a temperature scene is called up (manually or automatically), the temperature in any number of rooms changes at the touch of a finger. Regardless of the set schedule, scenes can therefore quickly make the desired temperature changes without having to regulate each radiator individually.

Window open detection

A lot of heating energy is often lost during ventilation or if a window is left open for too long without being noticed. Window open detection detects sudden changes in room temperature or humidity and switches the heating off for a certain period of time to save energy. These time periods can be individually adjusted via the app.

Interaction with other devices (energy management)

In winter, intelligent shading (blind control) helps to heat your home free of charge with solar energy or to keep the heat inside the building. Multi-sensors for temperature or humidity inform consumers via push notifications about excessively high temperatures indoors (overheating detector) or when it is time to ventilate (ventilation detector). Elements for underfloor heating also integrate somewhat slower heaters into the heat control system. Holistic energy management is possible if the charging infrastructure, PV system, heat pump and other electricity-based consumers are integrated into the overall system.

Compatible with Alexa & Co.

Another plus point is the compatibility of the smart thermostat. Heating controls can be linked with Amazon Alexa & Co. The heating can therefore be conveniently controlled using voice assistance, for example: "Alexa, turn off the heating in the bathroom".
