The construction industry is facing decarbonization, which affects 40% of global CO₂ emissions. Julia Dorn spoke about sustainable construction at the Heuer Dialog event at ROCKETHOME.
The construction industry is facing one of its biggest challenges: Decarbonization. Accounting for around 40% of global CO₂ emissions, it is a key lever in the fight against the climate crisis. But sustainable construction is complex. It requires technological innovation, sound strategies and the ability to win people over to change. After her presentation at the Heuer Dialog event at ROCKETHOME in November, we spoke to Julia Dorn about the topic of decarbonization.
The challenge: decarbonization
Decarbonization means strategically reducing emissions - in both existing and new buildings. This is not just about technical measures, but also about the interplay of user behavior, ecological materials and innovative technologies:
- In existing buildings: climate-neutral electricity, more efficient heating systems such as heat pumps and optimized insulation are key levers.
- In new builds: sustainable building materials, the reuse of resources and the integration of smart technologies minimize the carbon footprint.
Julia Dorn puts it in a nutshell: "Decarbonization is not an easy task. We have to deal with the complexity, take into account the different requirements of individual buildings and at the same time get people on board. "This is the only way to create real, sustainable change."
Strategies for change
Successful decarbonization begins with a thorough analysis:
- Inventory: What energy is consumed? Which heating systems are in use? What potential savings are there?
- Action plan: Heat pumps, photovoltaic systems and smart technologies are integrated in a targeted manner.
- Step-by-step implementation: A refurbishment roadmap prioritizes measures that are both effective and economically viable.
This is not just about technical solutions, but also about imparting knowledge about technical aids, such as apps. "Many emissions are caused by incorrect usage behavior - a point that we must not neglect," says Dorn.
An industry in transition
The construction industry is changing, with new technologies and ecological standards becoming drivers of innovation. Topics such as the circular economy, the reuse of building materials and life cycle assessment are becoming increasingly important. Julia Dorn is convinced: "We need more education and a holistic approach in order to successfully implement decarbonization."
Together into the future
ROCKETHOME and BuildSystems are joining forces to offer a product that combines the strengths of both companies through joint synergies. Our aim is to offer our customers holistic and sustainable solutions that optimally combine technology, knowledge and innovation.
BuildSystems: Julia Dorn founded BuildSystems 2023 together with Martin Bittmann to support companies on their path to decarbonization. Unlike traditional energy consultancies, BuildSystems offers a holistic perspective that combines technical, strategic and economic aspects. From the creation of renovation roadmaps to certification according to ESG criteria - the advice is individually tailored to the customer's needs.
