From Utility Provider to Energy Guide - Stadtwerke Duisburg

Customer Story: The Energy Transition for End Customers – With Stadtwerke Duisburg, Home Energy Comes to Life.

What does the energy transition really look like for end customers? And what role can energy providers play in this? Together with Stadtwerke Duisburg, we demonstrate how complex technology can be transformed into a simple customer experience for Home Energy. The recipe for success: a seamless integration of e-commerce, hardware, and digital control.

The goal was clear: to move away from isolated solutions. After all, customers should be able to purchase hardware, install it, and control it intelligently right away—all from a single source. With the launch of the “StadtwerkE-Shop” and the accompanying “Stadtwerke Duisburg App” based on the ROCKETHOME platform, an ecosystem has emerged that makes HEMS (Home Energy Management System) accessible to the masses.

Reduce complexity

Homeowners often face a puzzle: a solar panel system from a roofer, a wallbox from an electrician, a heat pump from a plumber—and none of them are digitally compatible. Stadtwerke Duisburg wanted to tackle this very problem: customers should receive a solution that combines hardware purchase, installation, and smart control.

An integrated ecosystem

We have developed an end-to-end solution that supports customers from the moment they decide to purchase through to day-to-day operations.

The project consists of three key components:

  • The Stadtwerk E-Shop: Your one-stop digital shop for hardware and plans. Here, customers can configure solar panels, storage systems, and wall boxes and order them directly online.
  • The Stadtwerke Duisburg App: Your pocket-sized control center. The app serves as the central home energy interface for users. It visualizes energy flows in real time and highlights potential savings.
  • HEMS: The backbone behind the scenes. Our platform connects components (PV, storage, wallbox) regardless of manufacturer and automatically optimizes self-consumption—for example, by charging the electric car when the sun is shining.

Smart Energy in Everyday Life

The solution provides transparency and self-sufficiency. The city utility’s HEMS page makes it clear: the technology takes a back seat, while convenience takes center stage.

  • Maximum transparency: Customers can see at a glance: How much energy is my system generating? How much am I using myself? How much am I feeding into the grid?
  • Automated optimization: The proportion of self-consumption is maximized, which reduces electricity costs and makes the systems profitable more quickly.
  • More convenience: Everything is controlled through a single app—no need to switch between apps from different inverter and wallbox manufacturers.
  • Sustainability in my home: CO₂ reduction becomes measurable and tangible.

The project with Stadtwerke Duisburg shows that the key to customer loyalty lies not simply in selling kilowatt-hours, but in digital services that make life easier.

We are proud to be working together to drive the energy transition in Duisburg.
